Academies

The announcement of the Government's new Academies Bill signals marks a significant change to the academy programme. Under the Bill all maintained schools will have the opportunity to apply to become an academy.

Academies are all-ability independent state schools. Unlike other publically funded schools, they are not maintained by a local authority, but have their capital and running costs met by central government. TPP Law is at the vanguard of legal developments in academies. Having already helped establish academies throughout the country, we can assist schools on the legal requirements necessary for conversion to academy status.

Our academies team can help clients by providing advice throughout the academy establishment process. We are proficient in all of the main issues including establishing the academy trust, charity issues, property issues, asset transfer and staffing and TUPE issues. We are already assisting a number of community and foundation schools in their applications for academy status.

We understand that the legal documentation for establishing an academy involves a web of relationships with responsibilities and accountabilities which need to be properly understood. These need to be shaped to allow the creation of an excellent learning environment both in the physical sense of school buildings and facilities, and in the organisational sense of the governance and management of the successful school.

For more information on how to convert to Academy status please contact Graham Burns on 020 7620 0888.
