Pensions portability for NHS employees

The Department of Health and unions are close to a deal on allowing NHS employees who transfer to the private sector to keep their NHS pension, according to Health Service Journal. The deal has yet to be approved by the Treasury but, if it is, would appear to be the latest concession won by health unions in the run-up to the general election. The CBI remains wary that private companies might be asked to make larger contributions than NHS employers. A pension deal would also be popular with the private sector. It has long been argued that the inability to access the NHS pension scheme is the largest obstacle to private involvement in the NHS because the scheme is underwritten by the Treasury. More
