Public Sector Reform
On 13 January, consultancy firm Deloitte published a report
on public services. The report looks at the need to overhaul public sector services
and how they are managed in order to avoid serious deterioration in the quality
of the services provided.
The report emphasises the need for Local Authorities to become more commercially
savvy in the current financial crises and to take rapid preventative action to avoid
causing severe damage to the quality of the public services provided. The need to
reassess budgets and risks and draw up strategic and contingency plans is now more
than ever fundamental in the current financial climate as Central Government can
no longer be relied upon to assist Local Authorities with financial pressures on
projects.
The report goes on to highlight the need for urgent action on public sector pensions,
as Local Authorities pensions expenditure continues to soar and with it the deficit,
together with emphasising the possibility that some third sector entities and private
contractors that are providing an array of public services may become insolvent
in the next few years. Local Authorities need to have plans in place of how they
are going to tackle these issues.
The report concludes that reviews and strategies need to be implemented now to carry
Local Authorities successfully through what is likely to be a very turbulent 5 years.
